Wimo Ambala Bayang began his artistic journey studying photography at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Even as a student, Wimo’s vision and ideas gained attention in the Indonesian photography circles and beyond. Wimo realises that the art of photography had gone beyond creating images and reproducing reality.
Wimo likes to create images that imply invisibility and unpredictability to challenge the viewer’s notion of meaning. Through this photo series featuring stones, Wimo questions and encourages dialogue about the relationship between an object and its meaning. The subjects in Wimo’s photo series are presented as stones, seemingly released from their normal environments and gravity. In several works, the stones are carved with words often used to describe and label artworks, including as “copy”, “original”, “fake” and “worthy”.

Why stones? Wimo chose the objects after the Mount Merapi eruption in the Central Java region. The natural disturbance caused stones to migrate and to be displaced. Wimo saw images of large boulders embedded in streams of volcanic mudflow and it inspired the series. He constructed the installation out of lifelike resin stones and the entire project took four years to complete.

Wimo lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His work has been featured internationally, including the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Taiwan, China and Australia.
